NSW Pensioners win free photo ID card

“Pensioners in NSW have had a win today with the Assistant Transport Minister David Borger’s announcement that pensioners and war widows will now be able obtain a photo ID card free of charge,” said CPSA Policy Coordinator Charmaine Crowe.

“Pensioners do not have to pay for a driver’s licence. However, if you cannot drive but need a form of identification, you’re hit with a $44 charge for a photo ID card from the RTA.”

“CPSA has long argued that this policy discriminates against the large number of pensioners who cannot drive, either because of disability or the unfair Older Driver test.”

“Unfortunately, low-income health care card holders are excluded from in the exemption, despite trying to live on very tight budgets.”

“Pensioners welcome the fee exemption, and continue to call on the NSW Government to scrap the Older Driver test.”

“Drivers aged 85 and over should not be discriminated against because of their age.”
