NSW Government sees the light: unanimous upper house support to keep nurses in nursing homes

"CPSA welcomes the NSW Government's support for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party bill to reinstate the requirement for nursing homes to have a Registered Nurse on duty around the clock, which has been passed unanimously in the NSW upper house today." said Ellis Blaikie, CPSA Policy Coordinator.

"Vulnerable nursing home residents need high quality care around the clock and much of this care can only be delivered by a Registered Nurse. Without a Registered Nurse on duty, nursing homes frequently have no choice but to transfer residents to already overwhelmed hospital emergency departments for treatment'

"The RN 24/7 requirement is even more critical in rural and regional areas, where the nearest hospital may be hours away. Unless there is a Registered Nurse on duty around the clock, nursing home residents in country NSW are at serious risk.

"The decision to employ a Registered Nurse should be solely based on the care needs of residents, not the bottom line." Ms Blaikie said.
