Fairer aged care accommodation charges?

The federal Minister for Ageing, Mark Butler, today announced the Government’s response to the recommendations put forward by the Aged Care Financing Authority about aged care accommodation charges.

“The revelation that Queensland nursing home Southport Lodge had no staff rostered on at night underscores the need for mandatory staff-to-resident ratios in all nursing homes”, said Charmaine Crowe, Senior Policy Advisor.

The ‘no-staff-to-resident ratio’: Aged care facility has no staff at night

“In what can only be described as a triumph for the residents of Queensland’s Southport Lodge hostel, the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency has found that by rostering on no staff between 8pm and 6.30am, the home does not comply with its responsibilities under the Aged Care Act,” said Charmaine Crowe, Senior Policy Advisor.

Sprinklers save NSW Nursing home

“Reports this afternoon of a 120-bed Illawarra nursing home being saved from a fire by its sprinkler system show why sprinklers should be mandatory Australia-wide”, said Senior Policy Advisor Charmaine Crowe.

Reports of nursing home resident abuse up by 8.6%

The Department of Health & Ageing’s Report on the Operation of the Aged Care Act 2011/12 released today shows that mandatory reportable assaults on nursing home residents continues in an upward trend increasing by 8.6% from last year, to 1,971.[1] On the other hand, consumer complaints are down from last year.
