The ‘no-staff-to-resident ratio’: Aged care facility has no staff at night

“In what can only be described as a triumph for the residents of Queensland’s Southport Lodge hostel, the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency has found that by rostering on no staff between 8pm and 6.30am, the home does not comply with its responsibilities under the Aged Care Act,” said Charmaine Crowe, Senior Policy Advisor.

(Accreditation report here:http://bit.ly/ZenWSF).

Southport Lodge, operated by Planlow Pty Ltd, has been living up to the company’s name by having no supervision of its 33 residents at night.

“However, this does prove one thing, which neither the Agency or the Department of Health and Ageing have been previously willing to admit: a minimum staffing level in Australia’s aged care system comprises at least one staff member per any number of residents.”
