Liquid funerals

BURIALS are expensive, cremations not environmentally friendly. The funeral industry has come up with a number of alternatives. Water cremation is one of them.

Water cremation is known under a number of names, but the most exact description is alkaline hydrolysis. This involves a chemical process which takes about three hours and like cremation results in an ash-like powder.
Because the body has to be placed in a steel chamber in a biodegradable body bag for the hydrolysis process to take place, it has to be removed from the coffin, making the idea of a rental coffin more of a possibility than in traditional cremations.

Obviously a rental coffin is also a possibility in traditional cremations, although they are not used very often.

We understand that water cremation costs in the region of $1,800.
